Haldar, Guha, Towsley and Rozpędek Simulate Encoded Hybrid Quantum Repeater Chains Over 960 Kilometers With a Quarter of the Costly Memories, arXiv 17 September 2026

Four authors from UT Arlington, UMass Amherst and the University of Maryland ran circuit-level Monte Carlo simulations of a 49-node, 960-kilometer quantum repeater chain that mixes fast, error-prone memories with slow, precise ones, and found that placing the expensive error-correcting node at every other station matches a chain built entirely from the costly platform at a quarter of its memory count. We read what long-distance entanglement distribution would let a force do, why the work is dual-use by funding and by design, and why the unbuilt cross-platform gate is the line item on which the hybrid repeater architecture stands or falls.
