What Does Executive Order 14434 of 29 September 2026 Change When Federal Agencies Must Say “Super Intelligence” Instead of “AI”?

What Executive Order 14434 orders

President Trump signed Executive Order 14434, “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” on 29 September 2026, and the Federal Register published it on 2 October at 91 FR 63129. It makes it Administration policy that the executive branch uses “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and policy documents, and that it “will not acknowledge the usage of” the older terms in any applicable setting. Regulations, Presidential actions, contracts, grants and other historical documents already issued stay as they are.

Why the legal meaning stays the same for now

Section 3(a) defines Super Intelligence as exactly the technologies covered by the statutory definition of artificial intelligence at 15 U.S.C. 9401(3), the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020. That definition reaches any machine-based system that makes predictions, recommendations or decisions for human-defined objectives. Section 3(b) gives the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology 60 days, until about 28 November 2026, to send the President draft legislation for a federal definition of “Super Intelligence” and conforming amendments to existing statutes.

Where the change will be felt

This post answers one question: what changes, for whom, and when. The answer runs through federal search and monitoring, the collision of “SI” with the International System of Units that NIST maintains, and compliance mapping against the EU AI Act.
