Cross the horizon

For centuries we built instruments that extend human reach: the lens, the microscope, the computer. Something new is happening now.

Artificial intelligence has begun to work alongside quantum science, helping researchers imagine and design the instruments that probe matter at the scale where its properties are born. When the tools that help us think meet the layer where chemistry and materials take shape, the distance between a physical insight and a useful medicine, material, or machine starts to shrink.

Some of what is coming is already close enough to touch. Emerging quantum sensors can record the faint magnetic whisper of a child's brain with gentler equipment, without sedation. In one laboratory, a major pharmaceutical company simulated a real step of drug synthesis on a quantum machine. In another, the delicate quantum behavior inside a living organism was measured and gently steered for the first time. A few years ago, each of them would have seemed out of reach.
