IonQ Receives $7.5 Million Phase 2 Funding From AFRL, 27 October 2026, to Add Free-Space Optical Links and Quantum Frequency Converters to the Rome, New York Quantum Network
IonQ said on 27 October 2026 that the Air Force Research Laboratory has released $7.5 million of follow-on funding, drawn from the $21.1 million collaboration announced in January 2025, for Phase 2 of the quantum network at AFRL's Information Directorate in Rome, New York. The award funds free-space optical links with pointing, acquisition and tracking, two quantum frequency converter modules, O-band network hardware with upgraded polarization controls and interface cards, and automated control software. This post reads the award as a dual-use quantum networking capability in the entanglement distribution sub-branch, sets it against the 2021 research-center designation, Qunnect's Innovare fiber testbed and the April 2026 two-computer entanglement, explains why a funded contract phase gets no readiness level, and lists the published rate and fidelity, the free-space optical result in weather and daylight, the second hardware type and the repeater that still separate the award from a network a program office can rely on through quantum frequency conversion.
