Brazil's Army Inaugurated a 12 km Quantum Key Distribution Link Between CITEx and the Ministry of Defense on 30 September 2026: What the Rede Quandanga Demonstration Shows and What It Leaves Open
On September 30, 2026 the Brazilian Army switched on a 12 km quantum key distribution link between its Integrated Telematics Center, CITEx, and the Ministry of Defense in Brasília, the longest of its kind on that fiber in Brazil according to the Army's October 1 release. We read the release and the Defesa em Foco account: an imported QKD unit paired with a Brazilian encryptor by the Instituto Militar de Engenharia, a launch-day demonstration in which a conventional channel was breached under simulated intrusion while the quantum link flagged and stopped it, and a research line that ran 40 km of spooled fiber before this hop. It is a defensive capability at rung 6, with authentication, assurance of the imported device and published key-rate and uptime figures still ahead, and the UK NCSC's QKD caveats frame what a program office should ask next.
