Fraunhofer IAF's Diamond Laser Threshold Magnetometer Reaches 100 Percent Contrast Across 280 Microtesla, Nature Communications, 22 October 2026: What It Offers Magnetic Navigation, TRL 4
Fraunhofer IAF in Freiburg put a nitrogen-vacancy diamond inside a 1042 nanometer laser cavity and showed a magnetic field switching the laser fully off and on, reaching 100 percent optical contrast, 50 milliwatts of signal and a ±280 microtesla linear range in Nature Communications on 22 October 2026. The authors list magnetic navigation and magnetic anomaly detection among the uses. This post reads the result as a dual-use sensing capability at TRL 4: what the numbers establish, how they compare with the sensors flying on the Air Force MagNav and AQNav testbeds, and what still separates a laboratory bench from a program office.
SandboxAQ Flies AQNav Magnetic Navigation on Northrop Grumman's Lumberjack, the First Reported MagNav Test on an Attritable One-Way-Attack Drone
On September 9, 2026, SandboxAQ and Northrop Grumman reported the first flight test of magnetic navigation on an attritable one-way-attack drone, with AQNav installed into Lumberjack's existing systems in under an hour. We read what the test establishes for GPS-denied operations, set it beside Q-CTRL's Coral Sea gravimetric trial and Saab's quantum-timed radar network, and lay out what still separates a flight campaign from the alternative PNT capability a program office can rely on.
